getting ready for haiti.

The last knitting sunday in acworth where all the wise knitters assemble to wish as well for our derparture to Haiti. Nicholas and I are making last preparation for our work on ile-a-vache. for the next two months we will be working and living with a small island community in the southern region of Haiti. Here we will be working with local women and children to build a school, establish a community garden, baking, and craft center. Our goal is to teach and help the community create a model for sustainable development projects. These initiatives will bring food, education and a means of income.

Our involvement with this project has been made possible through the generous support and encouragement of Acworthians, Doko Breads customers, local businesses and friends. The active members of the Knit Wise, knitting group has been especially helpful in raising money for the cause. Knit Wise has created a variety of colorful knitted creations that can be purchased at the Acworth Store. All proceeds from the knitting project will help educated and build a very much needed school for the children of Ile a vache. Seeds of Change has made a generous contribution of seeds for our community garden project. A local tool collector also donated kilos of hand tools which will be used to teach people to build benches and tables for the classrooms. Burdicks Chocolate (www.burdickchocolate.com) and Gail Wilson Designs (www.gailwilsondesigns.com) have also expressed interest in creating business opportunities for the local women.

A Little About Where we Are Going: Il A Vache, Haiti
We are colaborating with the EDEM Foundation which is an established 501c3 non-profit doing work in this region. We plan to spend 2 months on the small island community of Ile a Vache which has 15,000 inhabitants, no roads, no electricity, and no running water. We will however, have limited access to internet so we will keep you posted and look forward to hearing from you!
