Greetings Gardeners,
Skeet Peltier is organizing roto-tilling in South Acworth for the morning of Saturday, April 10th.
If you are interested in having your plot tilled give Skeet a call at 835-9076 to make arrangements. It would be good to have a count by Saturday, April 3rd so the owner of the machinery can plan ahead.
Cost is estimated at $20 per plot and $45/hr for larger areas if there is time and interest in opening up any new ground. The tiller is on a tractor and suitable for plots that haven't been tilled in a couple of years.
I am encouraging people not to till in the areas heavy with comfrey, currently covered with black plastic at the head of the garden.
Most of the plots cultivated last year have been called for. Unless people have requested otherwise we are assuming you will stay on the same plot. Please contact me if you have not selected a place or wish to change locations. 863-6366
Here is a copy of the calculations for manure sent out last fall:
John Luther delivered 16 yards of manure @ $12.50/yd. Total bill $200.
16 yards of fresh manure is a little over 10 tons or ~20,000 lbs.
At $0.01 a pound the rough calculation puts a wheelbarrow load at $2.00 and a regular sheetrock pail at $0.33.
A contractor's wheelbarrow holds 6 sheetrock pails or about 200 lbs. The pile could be moved in 100 wheelbarrow trips or about 600 sheetrock pails.
A small pick-up truck would be about $15.75 for a level load or just under 13 wheelbarrow loads for 16 yards.
In sum:
1 large wheelbarrow load - $2.00
1 regular sheetrock pail - $0.33.
Keep your own tallies and we will settle up later, pouring any profits into the ground.
Many thanks to Claude for mapmaking, Peter for building frames in the greenhouse, to Dorise, Pascaline and Jericho for signs, to Skeet for helping set up the tilling schedule, to Doug and Kathi for managing the money and of course to Matt and Maryellen for their long term investment in the land.
Sincerely,
John Tuthill
